Have you fallen for a hammock chair and want to hang it from the ceiling of your living room, bedroom or terrace? It's an excellent idea for creating a relaxing space that's both attractive and comfortable. You can also hang your hammock chair from a beam or tree branch, making sure they are sturdy beforehand.

To ensure safe, long-lasting use of your installation, it's essential to follow a few important steps when attaching your hammock chair. We'll show you step-by-step how to install your hammock chair securely.

Step 1: choosing the right location

First of all, you need to decide where you are going to place your hammock chair. The choice will depend on the layout of your room, the presence of beams or load-bearing elements, and the space you have available.

Favour the corners of rooms to save space and ensure greater stability.

Make sure there is a minimum distance between your hammock chair and the surrounding walls, generally indicated by the manufacturer.

If possible, choose a position close to a window so that you can enjoy natural light and a pleasant view while you relax.

If you're outside, choose your spot according to your preference for shade or sun.

Step 2: Prepare the necessary equipment

Once you've chosen a location, it's important to gather together all the materials you'll need to attach your hammock chair.

Here's a list of the essential items:

  • Rope or chain: depending on the model of hammock chair and fixing kit you have, you'll need either a strong rope or a metal chain to hang it from.
  • Steel ring or grommet: to join the loop of the hammock chair to the rope or chain of the fixing kit.
  • Drill: to drill the hole where the fixing hook will be inserted into the ceiling. If the hammock chair is suspended from a beam or tree branch, it is best to go around the support with the rope and tie a strong knot to secure the chair.
  • Anchors: adapted to the type of ceiling (concrete, wood, plasterboard) and the size of the pre-drilled hole.
  • Fixing hook or swivel: specially designed to hold the hammock chair and withstand the weight and movements it will undergo.

You'll find these items (apart from the drill) in our Jobek Hammock Chair Fixing Kit: The Perfect Set.

Step 3: Check the solidity of the support (ceiling, beam or branch)

The safety of your installation depends above all on the ability of the ceiling, branch or beam to support the weight of the hammock chair and the person using it. It is therefore essential to :

  • Locate the wooden joists or beams under the plasterboard, if your ceiling is made of this material. The use of a material detector can be useful at this stage.
  • Fix directly into the load-bearing element (beam, joist), especially if the ceiling is made of concrete or solid wood.
  • Check that the anchors and fixing hooks you use are strong enough to support the total weight of the installation.
  • Test and check that the beam or joist you are going to use is strong enough to support the weight.

Step 4: Drill the hole and install the fixing hook

Now that everything is ready, it's time to get started! Here are the steps for drilling the hole and fitting the hook:

  1. Mark the exact location where the hook will be installed with a pencil, to avoid any mistakes when drilling.
  2. Using your drill, drill a hole to the diameter and depth recommended by the hook and plug manufacturer.
  3. Insert the dowel into the drilled hole and push it in until it fits perfectly.
  4. Then screw the fixing hook into the plug until it is tight and stable. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for screwing.

Step 5: Hanging the hammock chair

Now that the hook is in place, all you have to do is hang your hammock chair:

  1. Prepare the fastening materials mentioned above. Depending on the model, you may need to tie a knot around it or attach a link chain.
  2. Pass the rope or chain from the hammock chair through the ring as indicated in the instructions supplied by the manufacturer, then tie a secure knot to hold the whole thing in place.
  3. Finally, hang the hammock chair on the previously installed fixing hook, making sure that all the components are secure and stable.

A few tips to make the most of your hammock chair

Now that your hammock chair is firmly attached, a few tips will help you make the most of this relaxing space:

  • Install a cushion or small mattress on the seat to make the hammock chair more comfortable.
  • Add decorative accessories to personalise your relaxation area (plaid, string of lights, hanging plants).
  • Remember to check the tension of the rope or chain and the condition of the fasteners regularly to ensure optimum long-term safety.

If you follow this advice, you'll be able to enjoy your ceiling-mounted hammock chair in complete safety. All that's left for you to do is enjoy the moments of relaxation that go with it!
